Loongson, a fabless Chinese CPU manufacturer, announced the successful tapeout of two new processors, the 2K3000 and the 3B6000M, designed for industrial control and mobile, respectively. Both chips employ the same underlying silicon but have been uniquely packaged for their target markets. It’s important to note that reaching High Volume Manufacturing (HVM) for these chips may take some time, and we’re likely months away from seeing them being produced at scale....

A new report by theUK-China Transparencyorganization claims that British company Imagination Technologies has supplied Chinese companies with critical GPU IP technologies that could be used for China’s government, military, and secret service applications. In the report, UKCT accuses Imagination’s managers and investor Canyon Bridge (which is controlled by China Reform, an arm of the Chinese government) of facilitating the transfer of key technology assets to Chinese companies, which now rival Imagination and other GPU developers....

The Colossus Supercomputer may be a colossal problem for the world’s richest man. Last July Elon Musk fired up the Colossus, a supercomputer that uses100,000NvidiaH100GPUs on a single fabric. The site could draw only 7 MW at its launch, however, enough to power just 4% of its GPUs. To solve this, Muskdeployed several massive mobile generatorsto deliver the site’s electrical demands. This was supposed to be a temporary solution. At the same time, the Memphis facility awaited approval from the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) for at least 50 MW of supply and the completion of its 150 MW substation (which was supposed to be finished by 4Q24)....

TheFederal Bureau of Investigation(FBI) has issued a strongly worded Public Service Announcement (PSA) regarding the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s (DPRK’s) aggressive targeting of cryptocurrency resources. The PSA comes as state-backed hackers have been observed increasing the persistence, scale, and sophistication of their efforts targeting sectors like cryptocurrencyexchange-traded funds(ETFs) over recent months. Thankfully, the FBI also uses its PSA to reveal some of the social engineering tactics and mitigations to be aware of....

The PCI Special Interest Group (PCI SIG) has published thefirst official draft of the PCIe Gen 7.0 specification for its members to review. The draft includes all the specifications changes Gen 7 will receive overPCI Gen 6so its members can make changes if needed. The new PCI Express revision is still on track for a full release in 2025. Gen 7 is the next revision of PCI Expressafter Gen 6. If you thought Gen 6 was already super fast, Gen 7 will double the bandwidth of Gen 6, featuring data rates of up to 128 GT/s....

Galax has unveiled a new mid-range Hall of Fame graphics card featuring Nvidia’s all-newRTX 4070 Super GPU. At theBlack Hat cybersecurity conferencein Las Vegas, a team of researchers just let the cat out of the bag about a new vulnerability affecting a very popular RISC-V CPU. Theso-called GhostWrite attackaffects the XuanTie C910 and C920 CPUs by Chinese chip company T-Head. The flaw allows attackers to gain root access or even pull the administrator password from system memory. The researchers, from CISPA Helmholtz Center for InformationSecurityin Germany, unveiled the flaw and noted several devices susceptible to it....
