Paper jams on HP printers are generallyfalse paper jamsthat you may easily fix with asimple restart.

But if you’re dealing with anactual paper jam, restarting won’t help. Instead, you’ll need toget thepaper scrapsout of your printer. You may even need toreset your printerto factory settings.

Here, I’ll demonstrate the exact troubleshooting process I follow to fix paper jams on myHP LaserJet Pro 400 MFP M425dnprinter. I’m sure you’ll be able to figure it out as well.

Restart Your Printer

To begin with, restart your printerand see if the error goes away. In case that does not work, I also advise you topower cycle the printer. To do it,

Check Stuck Papers Under the Toner Cartridge Cover

If restarting/power cycling doesn’t work, it’s very likely you are experiencing atrue paper jam. So it’s time to check and remove anytorn papers/scrapsstuck inside the printer.

Let’s start by clearing out stuff under thetoner cartridgecover. Quickly grab aflashlight, compressed air/blower, and aprying tool. Then,

Clear the Paper Path

The toner cartridge area is the most prone area for paper jams. So, we cleared it out at the very beginning. Still, there are also chances thepaper is stuck in the paper path. Now let’s clean the same.

Reset the Printer

HP printers are equipped with optical sensors whichdetect paperswhen they pass through the paper rollers.

Sometimes, aglitch in the printer’s memorycan stop the sensor from working. And you get the paper jam error.

No worries though!Factory resetting your HP printerwill again bring it back to its normal state.

I have fixed the paper jam issue several times on myLaserJet Pro 400 MFP M425dnwith a factory reset. So, I strongly recommend you give it a try.

However, remember that you mustset up the printer from scratchafter a reset.

Finding Hardware Defects

If nothing seems to work, there’s a high chance the optical sensor has failed. Or, theroller wheels have worn outand need a replacement.

Please take your printer to the authorized HP repair center and ask them to look into the issue.
